The fact that many are still writing and talking about him, that his highlights are being watched over and over even after he played his last NBA game more than 10 years ago is just the beginning of the story of how legendary Allen Iverson is. Not just as a player, but as a person, which makes him a true basketball icon.

It is obvious who will be the focus of today’s blog and we are really looking forward to it for all of those who do not know too much about the man called “The Answer” because today they could learn a lot of interesting things, and everyone who knows about him will gladly remember numerous accomplishments from his unique career. There might be few fans that have A.I. in the #goat debate, but there are many who admire his life and respect his influence, both on and off the floor.

This is why we will start from his childhood, which unfortunately was far from ideal. His mother was only 15 when he was born in 1975 and she raised him on her own. Friends say that despite his difficult life circumstances, he was always ready to help others, and he has yet another nickname from that time – Bubba Chuck. An example that shows what challenges he faced is a story about his mother and how she once bought him his favorite basketball sneakers instead of paying the electricity bill…

Once in high school, it became clear how talented he was in sports, as in addition to basketball, he also played football. To make things even better, not only was he the quarterback, but he also played running back and defensive back positions which is really rarely seen. As a junior in high school, he confirmed his talents with Virginia championship titles in both of these sports and he was also named the best basketball and football player in the state. However, the problems continued when he was present at the scene of a fight initiated by racial motives, which is why he ended up in a correctional facility. However, after 4 months, it turned out that he was accused without adequate evidence, and the governor pardoned him, while large rallies of support for him also contributed to that.

He was further helped by famous coach John Thompson who offered him a scholarship to Georgetown University. This proved to be a great move and after two successful college seasons it was time for the next level – among NBA pros. Without too much hesitation, Philadelphia took advantage of their first pick in the draft and made him the shortest (183 cm) 1st overall pick ever. Already after his first game, it became clear how right the 76ers were because Iverson recorded 30 points and 6 assists. Many will also remember the time when he scored 37 against the Bulls with a vicious crossover on Jordan:

Of course, he was also the Rookie of the year and soon a solid team was built around him with a peak in the 2000/2001 season when he was the MVP of the All-star game, the league’s top scorer with 31.1 points and leader in steals and MVP – again as the shortest player ever receiving this honor. It’s really difficult to describe how spectacular he was in the first game of the Finals that year so here is a short video reminder about it, but eventually the Lakers with Shaq and Kobe were too much to handle for them.

Despite never winning a title, A.I. became a role model to many because of his skills, attitude and style of clothing and became so influential that eventually (in 2005) the NBA introduced a dress code rule for all players which is directly linked to him! The Sixers never made it back to the Finals and over time there was a rift that led to Iverson being traded to the Denver Nuggets, and later he played for Detroit and Memphis. He returned to Philly for his final season, but he ended his NBA career in February of 2010. After that, he played 10 more games for Beşiktaş in the 10/11 season, and in 2017 he played one BIG3 league game where he was also a coach.

When it’s all said and done, he really had a great career about which there are several documentaries (Netflix, youtube), and some of his major accomplishments are:

  • NBA MVP
  • leading NBA scorer X4
  • NBA leader in steals X3
  • 11 All-star appearances with two ASG MVP awards
  • 7 All-NBA team selections
  • bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Athens
  • elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
